I suspected gluten allergy or even Celiac disease at one point. Handily, there are blood tests now for both of them. The blood test for Celiac is pretty new, so a lot of people don't know about it, but it would be a very easy way to find out what the problem is. I decided to blood test because it would be very hard for me to eliminate gluten at this point and I didn't want to go through it unless I could be sure that was the problem.

If it's Celiac, you would have to give up gluten altogether. If it's allergy, you could probably still have it in small amounts. So the distinction is pretty important.

Then on top of all that there's just being "gluten sensitive", which appears to be my problem. Small amounts of gluten, mixed well with other foods, I'm fine. A big ol chunk of gluten (like a Morningstar Farms mushroom burger) and I am sick :(

I try not to eat much soy anymore at all. It's just too dangerous.

Good luck figuring things out :)

What about trying a less restrictive diet for a while, rather than a more restrictive one? Worst thing that could happen is that you'd decide it didn't make you feel good and change it again. Maybe add fish?

Good luck on your job interview!

Good luck. I have suggestions for how you could make it work, but I'm sure you know all of them already, like legumes or older grains (spelt/quinoa/amaranth/etc), so instead I will simply wish you luck tomorrow. I'm sure you'll sort out your dietary issues one way or another, but it's a bummer to have one more thing on your plate.

Sorry to hear about the gluten issues. I went gluten free for six weeks last winter (on top of my usual veganism) as part of a sensible detox (no weird diuretics etc...). Check out hemp products if they are available. Not as a mainstay but it can help. I also ate a fair amount of legumes (with minimal gas surprisingly). I never felt better and I had plenty of energy (was training for a half-marathon). Eating out was tough. I stuck with organic restaurants as well as Indian and Ethiopian. But I did hit parties and had a blast (was also not boozing). I am thinking of getting back to this way of eating again as I have slipped back to too many processed foods.
