Hi Heather, I know this is an extremely old entry but it has been on my mind SO much lately — I have been quoting you to like everyone I talk to — in the wake of the Sarah Palin brou-ha-ha. Ellie, I confess, when I say conservative when talking American politics, I mean “swocial conservative.” It’d probably behoove me to make that clear, but if you’ve suggestins for better terminology, let me in on it!

The rest of y’all: bless. And yeah: no one needs to think about reproduction for women after marriage because in the creepyville-ideal, part of the marriage agreement is SUPPOSED to also be an agreement on a woman’s part that she hereby gives up her right not to be pregnant at any time, and to have any dominion over her body.

Please don’t assume that all conservatives are anti-choice or anti-feminist.

I just believe in fiscal responsibility. Which = conservative in my book.

I see Statism on both sides of the red/blue divide and it makes me want to scream regardless of affiliation.

The flawed logic behind that sign simply amazes me. I really shouldn’t be surprised, I suppose, but I am. People continually amaze me with their willingness to be sheep. Who needs to actually *think* about important things like relationships and reproduction, nevermind religion? argh…

this is an amazing rant, heather. definitely my favorite so far, too! i’m printing it out and sticking it to my office door, for inspiration and conversation-starting, because the conservative logic of marriage being the answer to all problems has certainly gotten into the air and become something that people just believe uncritically - you do a beautiful job of dissecting the “logic” in it.

this has to be my fave rant yet! please don’t misunderstand; i love your site, i think your do amazing work. i’m “cool aunt erin” to twin 9 year old girls, and i fully intend to introduce them to scarleteen in a few years (hopefully!) when the time comes, as i know they won’t get straight info in the environment the unfortunately live in.
you’ve enlightened me as well; i find myself ranting more and more about portrayals of women in media, and arguing statistics about rape and abortion rates with a certain co-worker who never wanted children, has 2 now, and doesn’t believe in abortion. it’s mind-boggling and exhausting, i don’t know how you do it.
