Today at the protester corner outside the day job there sat a couple signs. One was an illustration of a baby seal, holding a sign itself that said “Save the Humans.” I’m so not kidding.
I looked once, then again, then turned to Mark (who was driving me in) to express that I had strong doubts that seals would want more people around just so we can continue to club them to death, poison their environment or, on a good day, take them far away from home and lock them up in claustrophobic living spaces at no pay for our own amusement.
I mean, if a seal was going to hold up a protest sign that had anything to do with human beings in front of an abortion clinic, I’m inclined it’d read something like “YOU.S. OFF MY BODY!” or “At least they won’t skin THEIR babies alive,” or “Good Choice! Less People = More Seals.” (Or maybe they’d be protesting the protesters, with a sign that said, “I’M the seal of God, not you!”) And they’d probably be clapping.

BRILLIANT! I too pass an anti-choice protester on my way in to work each day…to Planned Parenthood. He has large signs in his front hard, and changes them almost daily.
Your post made me laugh out loud because he has a similar one, but it reads…..ready….”save the baby humans”. The cartoon nature of the sign and that slogan make me bust up every time I drive past!
I started with this post….I am off to read more

Thank you for this! I adore the mental image of a small posse of seals taking the time out of their busy sunning seal-schedules to come and counter-protest in front of an abortion clinic, smiling and clapping their flippers and barking joyfully in support of the women going in, and of course holding those signs, which would be painted (with natural pigments of course!) in a lovely swirly sea-letter-y scrawl. This will make it just a little easier to bear next time I see anti-choice protesters.

Cause this guy is soooo a paid up member of Greenpeace.
It always stikes me as funny, and somehow a little encouraging, when the right (or even the mainstream) steals the left’s work - a recognition they just don’t have the creativity or the cultural signifiers to do it on their own without pinching from us.
PS I love the last line.
