I know this is a really old post, but I had to coment on this. The T-shirts were a great initiative. I'm not a survivor myself, but I think a lot of ppl don't like survivors speaking out, and refuse acknoweledging rape because it makes them unconfortable. They don't wanna see that women like themselves or the women in their lives can be subjected to it, and they don't wanna see that men like the men in their lives or even men like themselves can perpetrate it.

And we've been told for so long that women should be ashamed of being raped that some ppl just can't wrap their heads around a woman wanting to speak abt it. Don't let all that hate and violence get to you. There are a lot of ppl all there who need you, and A LOT of ppl out there who would agree with you...the problem is most of them are voiceless. But you're trying to give them a voice, and for that I applaud you.

Dear Heather,
there are always people who don't understand, people who don't want to acknowledge the truth, people who want to blame...... Keep doing what you are doing. You are helping yourself and others to heal.

Bless you.

Just wanted to send you and yours some love and compassion.

I'm thinking of you, and your partner, and your dear ones, and trying to some you some ease. May tomorrow bring you sunlight, green things, warm tea and the soft fur of your dog. And a little bit of rest.

Love

"And if, from a Buddhist perspective, there truly is no separation between the self and others, and I am seeing and hearing from so many people who clearly need to work through all of this chaos, who have all of this inside and around them — and if the way I, myself, have been feeling has anything to do with anything — then all of these last few days hasn’t really just been about or for other people: it’s been about and for me, as well."

You SAID it here. Love and appreciate you so much. Sending my support.

Hugs. This is all such appalling behaviour, and so totally unfair. It's particularly disappointing that Amanda from Pandagon couldn't see that just because she wouldn't find it useful its not impossible that other survivors would. And all the people offering helpful alternative phrasing - sure, maybe some of those would have merit as well, but that's no reason to slam the people who've actually gone out and done something.

Regarding the media, I don't accept that you should assume this will always happen. We all know the press and TV can behave dreadfully, and its important to only deal with outlets you trust. But outlets and individuals vary - there are plenty that would act much better.

I just watched the video and wanted to say that, as someone new to your blog and the story, there's really no way to know that the image they show is of you. The reporter says that you didn't want your image shown...but never makes it clear that the person wearing the shirt is the person we hear in your interview. In fact I would not have know unless I had read your blog first.

So while I absolutely agree with you and think they should not have shown you, it's also not clear that the woman in the shirt is you. At least that was my impression.

Heather,

I am truly sorry for you having to go through this. While I can totally see your side and agree with your feelings over the horrible views some have regarding rape, I feel that I need to say something that I just can't let go. I know you asked for privacy for that interview, but you really should know better by now. I'm NOT saying it's your fault that they have done this story so poorly etc. All I'm saying is that you know the press and how they distort everything. I would have just thought that you would have figured as much by now with all your experience regarding how they would angle the piece. As a former journalist, I know fully well what they did regarding your privacy. They simply looked at your public persona and legitimized making you a known part of the story. Privacy only really applies to a victim of rape that is truly not a publicly known person. And even then, unless that person is a minor, it really isn't illegal for a paper to print the information. It is highly unethical and rarely done, but it's not against the law. Crimes committed that are prosecuted and or filed about are public record.

Most of the time, like I said, a paper will honor the privacy of a rape victim. It's sort of the standard really. But for you, unfortunately, your openness on your site etc. made you "public domain"...even the shirt did to a certain extent. And as far as a published photo lifted off the Net, well, that too is a gray area. There are plenty of issues with this all the time, yet not alot of laws etc. to enforce it. Without a true copyright, it's hard to go after anyone who borrows images etc. from a site. And since you were publicizing the shirt on your site, with your image and selling it also...well, they were like sharks with a bucket of fresh fish thrown at them...they knew they were getting a tasty morsel for sure. And, of course, to hell with whatever negative feelings it might have caused. They deal with that sort of thing all the time and know they are in the stronger position and it will eventually blow over. There is no accoutability with tv or newspapers about what harm they do. Surely, you know this? They do what they do, because, it's sensational and they can.

So, while I can empathize with you tremendously on having to deal with this, you have to realize that as long as you are out there speaking up on these issues and telling your story, the press will always consider you fair game, and legally they can. You've told the public you were raped on this site and others. That virtually erases you being anonymous in situations like these. I think, unless you really feel strongly about dealing with the possible aftermath, giving interviews, even verbal only, might be something you steer away from unless it's on your terms, meaning you go to them. It's just too likely to end like this...always does to some degree. I was the press. Don't trust them. I never did and I was one of them for quite a while. Thankfully, I'm not officially one of them any longer, by choice.

Once you've had to call grieving children to ask how they felt about their senior parents committing double suicide a few hours after their death...well, you reconsider the standards of your profession and change careers.

I'm sorry on behalf of those journalists who have lost all sense of right and wrong. And I appreciate your work...though I must admit the shirt did seem a bit crass to me. I TOTALLY get it's intent, and support that. I just think in our modern world, where girls wear panties that taut their vaginas being money makers etc., that a shirt with a meaningful message on it will only get perverted eventually. Gone are the days where wearing something like a war protest tshirt etc. actually do anything towards sparking thought or beneficial controversy. Unless Paris Hilton wore it perhaps. Then people would be wearing them whether they'd been raped or not. Sad state of affairs our society is coming to.

Hope you have a better weekend coming up. I hope you don't feel any negativity in my words here. They have NONE intentionally. I just wanted to try and give another perspective, which I guess you really don't need since it can't possibly make you feel any better about anything, lol. Underlying advice, simply put, don't talk to the press! ;)
