Pure As the Driven Slush: Heather Corinna's Journal and Diary, Online since 1999
May 5th, 2008

I just got back from a night and a day in oh-so-not-at-all-beautiful Yakima, Washington.

I was teaching the staff of the clinic there self-defense today, and had to try very hard, when telling them how best to keep safe and feel secure, not to simply say “First?  Get the hell out of this town.”

I am relying on Washington natives here to know I need say no more.

For reals! My stepfamily lived there. Total hellhole.

Been there a couple of times, back in my teenage years, and yeah. Despite me being there to visit the happy local charismatic Catholic crowd, it didn’t feel safe. I remember having nightmares of marching soldiers invading while I was there, which is a pretty good indication. And that was nearly thirty years ago, when the world felt much safer to someone like me.

    Damn, suddenly I feel old.
