Hey Heather, First off, hope you are Well! I miss you tons and think of you often - you are still my hero :)

I was interested to read that you were able to connect with a "pro-life, vegetarian, feminist, anti-war" woman. I met a woman in college named Sara who had the same beliefs. She was extremely consistent in ALL of her pro-life beliefs, including those totally unrelated to abortion. I always enjoyed talking to her, and respected greatly her reverence for all life. It's nice you've been able to discuss those perspectives - finding people with with those belief systems is surprisingly hard!

Right!
But why does it never occur to them that if we lose the right to speak our minds they will eventually also lose the right to speak theirs? Do they really think that they are so right that nobody will ever disagree and try and take away their right to speak too?

RE: the morality issue- you're not alone. I've been mulling over the same thing lately. In the midst of all the election scare tactics it has become obvious to me that lots of people really don't trust themselves or anyone else. Unless there's some big, bad punishment awaiting us, people don't have a reason to be good, moral creatures.

I find it not only confusing but depressing that some people don't have enough faith in themselves or in humanity to trust that people will do the right thing because it is right. Because it helps other people. Because it is for the good of everyone, not just the individual. I guess they don't buy into that whole 'love your neighbor' thing, and 'do unto others' only applies if someone is holding a gun to your head. Seriously. What's deal?

Sometimes, for my own peace of mind, doodyhead comments are all I can manage. But hey, at least they still have the right to BE doodyheads, right?
